Business Support Simplification Programme

Successful businesses are the lifeblood of our economy. Across government about £2.5 billion a year is spent supporting businesses and entrepreneurs – helping them meet the challenges they face.

But business tells us that the plethora of schemes available is confusing and they don’t always know where to go for the help they need. At the same time, the number of schemes makes it difficult for government, at all levels, to measure the impact of support and ensure that duplication is not taking place. DTI’s Small Business Service is leading the cross-government Business Support Simplification Programme to make it easier for business to access support and easier for government to ensure that support is value for money.

The aim of the programme is to increase the ease of use, effectiveness and efficiency of government support to business; it is not about cutting the amount of money going to businesses.

We are building a partnership of central and local government, the Regional Development Agencies and Business to create better services for business, making a real difference to communities and benefiting the economy as a whole.

The result will be ready-made solutions to meet business and policy needs:

  • Government working together on business support;
  • Business needs & preferences understood and acted on consistently and effectively;
  • Best practice monitoring in place to ensure value for taxpayers’ money

The new offer for business:

  • Fewer schemes and organisations to navigate
  • Clear, coherent branding
  • Support that is better value for taxpayers
  • Support that is shown to help business through effective monitoring
