About Us

Politically, economically, environmentally and socially, the world is being transformed. China has joined the World Trade Organisation (WTO). India, still home to some of the world's poorest people, is producing three million graduates a year. Ten more countries have joined the European Union.

Britain needs to change faster if we are to narrow the productivity gap with the other industrial nations. Our economy needs highly skilled employees and managers, innovative companies, forward looking unions and knowledgeable consumers working together to produce smarter goods and services and to make sure all our talents are used in our multi-racial and multi-cultural society.

In this world of rapid change and intense competition, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) plays a vital role, creating the conditions for business success; and helping the UK respond to the challenge of globalisation.

We do this by facilitating partnerships and promoting fresh thinking between government, businesses, employees, unions, consumers and the scientific community. We invest in world-class science and technology, and help ensure its successful exploitation. We promote a legal framework that encourages enterprise and innovation, ensuring consumers, companies and employees receive a fair deal. We ensure a successful economy is underpinned by secure, sustainable and affordable energy. And we champion British interests globally while promoting economic reform in Europe and free and fair world trade.
