Regional Economic Performance: Progress to date

The Government is committed to report on progress in implementing it's target to 'make sustainable improvements in the economic performance of all English regions by 2008, and over the long term reduce the persistent gap in growth rates between the regions, demonstrating progress by 2006'.

The Government's Regional Economic Performance PSA was set out in the 2004 Spending Review.

This 2004 Technical Note for the target set particular policy measures to address regional disparities in the key drivers of growth, and committed to demonstrating progress by 2006. This report fulfils that commitment. In particular, this interim report sets out the Government's progress on:

  • headline performance against the target including changes in disparities in the key drivers of growth; and
  • the implementation of the measures outlined in the 2004 Spending Review Technical Note on the target.
