Learning F.C.

Hard copies of this Document are now out of print

“Learning FC” is a Key Stage 2 and 3 curriculum resource pack of literacy, numeracy and ICT exercises on the theme of football.  It was developed in 2000 by DfES in partnership with Football in the Community (FiTC) and sponsored by the Professional Footballers Assoc, primarily to support the Playing for Success initiative.

It provides a range of football-related curriculum materials for use in study support provision or the classroom.  The materials are aimed at Key Stages 2 and 3 and encompass literacy, numeracy and ICT.  Whilst designed mainly with the needs of Playing for Success centres in mind, the pack has also been used by a much wider audience including primary and secondary schools.

Although the resource has been available for some time, there is still positive feedback received from schools that are working with it.

This section contains links to six PDF files.

Section 1 The Football Match (2.62 MB)
Section 2 The Players (1.73 MB)
Section 3 The Fans (1.71 MB)
Section 4 Football as a Business (2.07 MB)
Section 5 The Stadium (1.48 MB)
Section 6 The World (2.08 MB)

These sections can be taken in any order, and elements of each section can be used randomly. Each element of each section consists of two pages - a pupils' page and teachers' notes.

The pupils' page gives the activity detail. The teachers' notes provide guidance and an indication of the intended level or levels of work for National Curriculum purposes. As far as possible, note has been taken of the revised National Curriculum to operate from September 2000.

Resource requirements for exercises, with the exception of ICT, are modest and should be within the scope of most users. Pages are freely photocopiable if you wish, but please ensure that photocopies include the DfES Playing for Success credits carried on each page.

Each activity is both stand-alone and part of a sequence. Activities are intended to engage pupils and to encourage co-operation in learning. Please feel free to experiment and to expand or change activities.

The writing team are experienced, aging educationalists and football fanatics. Their educational experience includes several headships in primary and special schools, senior LEA posts and much experience in using football as a vehicle for learning. The earnest hope is that the materials will help to raise standards by engaging pupils.
