| The Energy White Paper, issued in February 2003, emphasised the importance of local and regional decision-making for energy
policy in delivering a number of national energy policy objectives. It confirmed the DTI’s commitment to “collect and make
available data on the pattern of energy use in local areas, to enable local authorities and regional bodies to target activity
more effectively”.
Gas And Electricity
Gas consumption statistics at regional (NUTS1) and local (NUTS4) levels for 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 are available by using
the links below:
Experimental electricity consumption statistics for 2003 and 2004 at the regional and local levels is available from the link
below:
Details about how the information on electricity and gas consumption has been collected and collated can also be found in
the articles in the June and December 2005 editions of Energy Trends (see 'Related Documents').
Road Transport Fuels
DTI has also released consumption statistics for fuels used in road transport at regional and local levels, which are available
by using the links below:
Details about how the information on road transport fuels consumption has been collected and collated can also be found in
the articles in the June and December 2005 editions of Energy Trends (see 'Related Documents').
The figures were provided for the DTI by Netcen. Netcen are a leading provider of consultancy, technical services and field
services in air quality, contaminated land and waste management. Netcen runs the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory
(NAEI) which is used by government departments, local authorities, regulators and industry.
Other Fuels
Information on other fuels including manufactured solid fuels, renewables, industrial petroleum and coal is available in the
December 2005 edition of Energy Trends at both regional (NUTS1) and local (NUTS4) levels.
Total Final Energy ConsumptionEstimates of total final energy consumption in 2003 was published for the first time in the December 2005 edition of Energy
Trends by aggregating the four main data sets shown above at both regional (NUTS1) and local (NUTS4) levels.
High Level Energy Indicators
Experimental high level indicators have been produced to complement the published 2003 local and regional energy data and
to assist sub national bodies develop and monitor local and regional energy strategies. A guidance note to aid interpretation
and data sets are available below.
Quality Indicators
A set of quality indicators has been developed to help users understand the reliability of the 2004 local and regional electricity
and gas consumption data. A guidance note and data sets are made available below.
Future work will include:
Information on:
- Compiling estimates of electricity for small areas (using middle layer super output areas, covering on average around 3,000
households).
- Improving access to regional energy data.
- Collecting meter point level gas consumption data from the newly reorganised gas distribution network.
