The Department of Trade and Industry’s European work

DTI ministers attend many of the European Union Councils that take decisions on policies directly affecting businesses, consumers and employees – for example, the Competitiveness, Employment, Energy and Telecommunications Council.

The DTI is also responsible for transposing most legislation originating in the EU, in areas such as technical standards, research, consumer protection, company law and corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, enterprise and industry policy, intellectual property, some aspects of employment law, many measures relating to energy and sustainable development, market liberalisation, trade policy, governance of the structural funds and a number of measures affecting telecoms.

DTI officials therefore work closely with members of the EU Commission, the European Parliament and officials in other Member States to develop policy in these key areas. The pages and links within this site provide a guide to the Europe Union (EU), and information on what the UK Government and in particular the DTI are doing to make the UK an effective partner in a competitive EU.

Our work encompasses a range of issues of particular concern to business and consumers in Europe, including:

  • EU enlargement
  • The promotion of economic reform
  • The Single Market - the benefits, the difficulties and the help availible to solve problems
