The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is an independent body that protects the health and well-being of the population. The Agency plays a critical role in protecting people from infectious diseases and in preventing harm when hazards involving chemicals, poisons or radiation occur.

We also prepare for new and emerging threats, such as a bio-terrorist attack or virulent new strain of disease.

National Heatwave Plan
On 17 July, Alert Level 3 under the National Heatwave Plan for England was triggered by the Met Office. Predicted temperatures for England and Wales over the next few days can be found on the Heat-Health Watch page of the Met Office's website. Advice on how to reduce the health risks associated with heatwaves, either for yourself or somebody you know, can be obtained from NHS Direct at www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk or on 0845 4647, or from your local GP or pharmacist.
