The Inspector of Anatomy is a statutory appointment under Section 9 of the Anatomy Act 1984. The current holder is Dr Jeremy Metters. The inspector’s role is to ensure human cadavers donated to anatomy departments in British Medical Schools are treated in compliance with the Anatomy Act and the attendant Anatomy Regulations 1988.

While the number of people donating kidneys, livers and other organs has increased over the last five years, the number of people in England and Wales leaving their whole bodies for medical science has fallen from 670 to 600 over that same period. This has meant that some schools no longer have sufficient for their teaching needs.
