What is the Environmental Permitting Programme?

Quick links

Transforming the way waste management and pollution prevention and control industries are regulated.

The Environmental Permitting Programme is a joint programme launched by Defra, Welsh Assembly Government and the Environment Agency, alongside other stakeholders, which will modernise environmental regulation.

The Programme will deliver a modernised permitting system, in line with EU requirements, sound environmental policy and the Government's principles of good regulation. The new system will be better for industry, better for regulators and better for the environment.

The first EPP consultation closed on 15 May 2006.

To discuss the EPP proposals in detail, an industry and stakeholder meeting hosted by ESA, Cutting Red tape: The Environmental Permitting Programme in practice, took place on 25 April 2006.

The then Minister of State (Climate Change and Environment) Elliott Morley spoke on the benefits of the Environmental Permitting Programme.

Representatives from the Waste and PPC sectors met with Defra and Environment Agency officials to discuss at the new environmental permitting system being developed. This continued the dialogue between Industry, Government and regulators that has been a high priority for the Programme.
