Sulphur Dioxide
Recommendation for an Air Quality Standard for Sulphur
Dioxide
The Panel recommend an Air Quality Standard for
sulphur dioxide in the United Kingdom of 100 ppb,
measured over a 15 minute averaging period.
This recommendation is intended to reduce the
exposure of the population, including individuals who may
be particularly susceptible, to levels of sulphur dioxide
at which harmful effects are unlikely to occur. Although
the exposure studies discussed earlier have primarily
investigated the effect of sulphur dioxide on people
suffering from asthma, it is likely that similar effects
may be observed in patients with other chronic lung
diseases. It is intended that techniques for monitoring
the Standard be consistent with those of the Department
of the Environment's national sulphur dioxide monitoring
networks.
