Recommendation for an Air Quality Standard for Carbon
Monoxide
- The Panel recommend an Air Quality Standard for
carbon monoxide in the United Kingdom of 10 ppm, measured
as a running 8 - hour average.
- This recommendation is intended to limit the exposure
of the population, including individuals who may be
particularly susceptible, to levels at which harm is
unlikely to occur. The Panel note however that, in
general, smokers will have elevated levels of
carboxyhaemoglobin and will not be influenced by
additional exposure to carbon monoxide in ambient air. It
is intended that techniques for monitoring the Standard
be consistent with those of the Department of the
Environment's national carbon monoxide monitoring
networks.
