How to make a request to re-use information

This guidance explains the procedures we operate to help you to make a request to re-use Defra's information under the Re-use of Public Sector Information Regulations.

When applying to re-use information, you should:

  • submit the request in writing - including email;
  • include your name and address in your request;
  • specify which documents or pieces of information you wish to re-use; and
  • state the purpose for which the document or information is been re-used for.

The application should be sent to

Defra Crown Copyright Officer
e-Communications Team
Area 4C
3-8 Whitehall Place
London SW1A 2HH

Email: webmaster@defra.gsi.gov.uk.

We will deal with your request as quickly as we can and will aim to provide a full response at the latest within 20 working days. If for any reason we are unable to let you have a response within 20 working days we will contact you as soon as possible explaining the reasons for this.

Applicants should be aware that if a licence is required to re-use Defra's information, this will be issued by the Office of Public Sector Information (OPSI), which will be sent to you direct. If a charge is made for the re-use of information, this will be administered by OPSI.

Should a request to re-use information be refused, we will:

  • give the reasons for refusal in writing;
  • explain our complaints procedure and other forms of appeal in our letter; and
  • if the refusal is based on the copyright and/or intellectual property rights being owned by a third party, we will identify that third party where they are known.

Should you wish to make a complaint about the way your request was handled by Defra, or if your request was refused, you should write to:
