Diversity in Defra

Diversity is a positive force, one that is inspirational, visionary. It embraces Defra's values and is seen to support the business.

Defra's diversity value

We treat everyone fairly, and encourage, value and recognise everyone's views and contributions.

This value goes beyond the way we treat staff. It is intrinsic to the way we deliver our service to stakeholders and the public.

Defra's role

Defra's work combines economic, social and environmental concerns. As a result Defra's work touches every member of the British public. Furthermore its work in both EU and international policymaking means it has a global impact.

Defra's customers

The 2001 Population Census of Great Britain highlighted that the nation is more culturally diverse than ever before.

Significant demographic changes have also taken place. A declining birth rate and increased longevity means Great Britain has an ageing population, with disabilities on the increase too. In addition there remain north/south and urban/rural divides.

As Defra staff we need to be aware of these factors and understand the dramatically different experiences, lifestyles and identities of our customers when formulating Defra policies and delivering our service.
