Brixham's fish industry is to get a £2 million boost from the European funds managed by Defra's Marine Fisheries Agency. The money will part fund a £7 million project for a new fish-landing quay, market building and associated infrastructure, as part of a wider £16 million regeneration of Brixham. The existing market will be refurbished to provide further facilities for fish-related businesses. Clearance for the funding was given this week by Defra officials, following a recent approval in principle decision, by a special Defra, Marine Fisheries Agency and Regional Development Agency panel that oversees applications for Financial Instrument for Fisheries Guidance (FIFG) Funds . Ben Bradshaw, Minister for Marine and Fisheries, said: “This is the largest FIFG grant we've awarded, and it reflects our confidence in Torbay Council's plans for the area. “I hope the money will provide the impetus needed for a successful regeneration project which will bring benefits to the whole of the local economy.' The FIFG money will provide improved fish processing facilities, more operational space, a dedicated cuttlefish area, improved chilling facilities, and a new electronic auctioning system. Nigel Gooding, Chief Executive of the Marine Fisheries Agency, said: “We're dedicated to helping fishermen, the fish industry, and fishing communities adapt in an ever changing world. “I wish Brixham every success with this impressive project.” Notes to editorsGrants are available to the fishing industry for a wide range of projects. The grants are funded by Defra and the European Union under the Financial Instrument for Fisheries Guidance (FIFG) and administered by the Marine Fisheries Agency. Details of the grants and application forms may be found on the Marine Fisheries Agency website www.mfa.gov.uk
