Independence for Statistics: A consultation document

In November 2005, the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced to Parliament the Government’s intention to legislate for independence in statistics. This document fulfils the commitment to publish proposals for consultation. The proposals build on the Government’s earlier reforms, strengthening the existing arrangements by entrenching independence in legislation. At the same time, the Government is considering other ways in which independence might be reinforced and statistical quality raised further, while retaining the benefits of decentralisation in statistical production and dissemination.
