This section contains guidance for government officials about the Crown Dependency islands of Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. It covers key issues, international issues and legislation. We can advise you on the most appropriate contact in the Crown Dependency governments and the best way of handling the constitutional relationship between the Crown Dependencies and the UK.
We have created a summary document about the islands that you can use to prepare for briefings. It covers: who the crown dependencies are; their governments; crown representation; crown appointments; their history; their relationship with the UK and the EU; treaties; and international agreements.
We provide the main channel of communication between the UK Government and the three Crown Dependencies. We represent the interests of the UK to them and their interests to other Government departments. We process legislation from Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man for Royal Assent and we consult with the Islands on extending UK legislation to them. We are also responsible for recommending crown appointments in the Islands.
The Lord Chancellor is the Privy Counsellor with special responsibility for the conduct of the islands’ business within Whitehall. The Right Hon Harriet Harman QC MP, is the minister responsible for the conduct of islands' business within Whitehall.
