  • Peter joined the Royal Navy in 1999 at the age of 18; his college career advisor suggested the Navy to Peter as he was looking for as much experience and responsibility in a career as possible, as well as wanting to travel.
  • Defence Secretary Des Browne has just visited Iraq’s crucial oil platforms in the Northern Arabian Gulf, and paid tribute to the Royal Navy for providing off-shore protection.
  • HMS Mersey, the Royal Navy’s newest Offshore Patrol Vessel, has spotted a 29 ft rowing boat competing in the Shepherd Ocean Four Trans Atlantic Race from New York to Falmouth.
  • After a well earned summer break following exercises off North West Scotland, HMS Middleton’s ship’s company returned to the ship at the beginning of the month to make the final preparations for our Baltic and Norwegian NATO deployment.
  • This year’s Devonport Navy Days has been a hailed a success after thousands of visitors poured through the Navy Base gates over the Bank Holiday weekend.
  • With the maintenance period and operational stand-off complete HMS York has now returned to her tasking in the Mediterranean in the form of Operation Active Endeavour (OAE). As you may have read in this section before, OAE is the NATO allies drive to prevent the use of the sealanes in the Mediterranean being used for terrorism, crime or trafficking.
  • The Royal Navy will help the Prince's Trust celebrate its 30th birthday by taking part in three unique events in Scotland as 10,000 people walk a mile, a "Giant Stride", to raise awareness for a charity which has helped countless thousands of children.
  • Since the last web post we have completed our first 22 day patrol in the Northern Arabian Gulf. This was a very demanding time for all of us but 'Kent' rose to the occasion and the patrol was judged a success.
  • At this year’s Royal Naval Volunteer Band Festival held in Portsmouth, the Volunteer band of HMS Seahawk, competing against the eight other Volunteer bands, ended the day with an abundance of trophies.
  • Visitors to Navy Days 2006 are being advised to plan their travel arrangements carefully as restrictions are put in place to prevent traffic gridlock in and around Devonport Naval Base.
  • A flotilla of foreign navies is lending an international flavour to this year’s Navy Days.
  • Patrol Boat (PB) 104 was successfully undocked from the Umm Qasr Naval Base Ship Lift on 24 Aug 06. The undocking follows a successful 2-month refit out of the water, which is a first for the Iraqi Navy.

    Following a short stop in Vigo in northern Spain, the remaining ships in the NATO Force sailed for the journey home on 12 Jul.
  • As part of the Royal Navy’s commitment to support the educational development of service and civilian personnel, the Learning Centre on the base organised a Learning at Work Day earlier this year.
  • On Wednesday 23 August, the Worshipful Mayor of Wigan, Councillor Eunice Smethurst and her consort, Mr Harry Smethurst paid an official visit to their town’s affiliated nuclear submarine when she visited HMS Sceptre alongside in Faslane.
