Energy Efficiency & Clean Technologies

Global energy demands are rising. The pressures on energy resources are set to grow. Global demand for traditional oil and other fossil fuels is likely under current projections to grow strongly in the coming decades, driven by strong growth in the large emerging economies like China and India. Without serious investment in new production and in new technology this will push up prices. Improving energy efficiency also has to be part of the global response. Efficiency gains boost competitiveness and stimulate economic growth. At the same time they enhance energy security and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions which cause climate change.

Key Objectives
  • Major international R&D effort, in line with G8 commitments and global medium to long-term energy security and climate requirements
  • Enhanced development of the global market for renewable energy and energy efficiency systems and faster take-up by large consumers
  • Enhanced international innovation in new, clean technologies
FCO Role

The FCO is working with other government departments (DEFRA, DTI) to remove the market barriers to existing clean technologies, to encourage the development of new climate-friendly technologies and to promote energy efficiency.
