JDP 1-10 Prisoners of War, Internees and Detainees

The purpose of Joint Doctrine Publication (JDP) 1-10 ‘Prisoners of War, Internees and Detainees’ is to provide high level joint doctrinal guidance on how to deal with persons who fall into the hands of UK Armed Forces during military operations, whether Prisoners of War (PW), civilian internees or those detained as a result of suspected or actual criminal activity.

JDP 1-10.1 Prisoners of War

As explained in JDP 1-10 ‘Prisoners of War, Internees and Detainees’, the following procedures meet the requirements set out in the 1949 Geneva Conventions (GCs),1 Additional Protocol I (AP I) and NATO Standardisation Agreements (STANAGs) 2033 and 2044. The Chapter and its Annexes are arranged, as far as possible, to follow the chronological sequence of a Prisoner of War (PW) progressing from the point of capture to his eventual release from captivity. A PW Handling Aide Memoire can be found at Annex 1A.

JDP 1-10.3 Handling Detainees

UK Armed Forces may be empowered under the Host Nation’s (HN) law to participate in the arrest of criminal suspects or may be involved in the arrest of persons indicted for war crimes. This chapter details the arrangements for the handling of such persons when they are being temporarily detained by UK Armed Forces during military operations abroad that do not amount to International Armed Conflict.
