Preamble

The legal framework within which this Code will operate is explained in the text. While every effort has been made to ensure that explanations included in the Code are accurate, only the courts can give authoritative interpretation of the law.

The Code's provision apply equally to men and women, but for simplicity the masculine pronoun is used throughout. Wherever it appears in the Code, the Word "court" is used to mean the High Court in England and Wales and the Court of Session in Scotland, but without prejudice to the Code's relevance to any proceedings before any other court.

Passages in this Code which are printed in bold green type outline or re-state provisions in primary legislation.

On the day on which this Code of Practice comes into operation in pursuance of an order under section 3(5) of the Employment Act 1980, the Code of Practice "Picketing" which came into effect on 17 December 1980 ceases to have effect subject to any transitional provisions or savings made by the order.
