The Sector Sustainability Challenge aims to stimulate action to catalyse implementation at company level.

The Government wants to build on the Pioneers Group and strengthen our work with business so as to improve our understanding of delivering long term decoupling in key sectors whilst putting in place measures to support that transition.

Therefore, the UK Sustainable Development Strategy commits the Government to set a new Sector Sustainability Challenge to support selected projects focused on taking forward sectoral or supply chain
initiatives to put SCP into practical action.     ...more

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

'Securing the Future' the Government Sustainable Development Strategy (UK SDS) of March 2005 recognises that better eco-design is essential for improving the performance of products and for stimulating real change in consumption patterns. Sustainability has to be 'designed-in' at an early stage of the product cycle. It is therefore proposed to bring together expertise through a new Sustainable Design Forum to champion and educate in eco-design and promote best practice.

The DTI, working with Defra and the Design Council, commissioned a scoping study on design and sustainability. The report maps UK sustainable design and draws out issues such as procurement, skills and public policy and makes some initial recommendations for taking sustainable design forward.

"Securing The Future" - new UK strategy for sustainable development

On 7th March 2005, the Government launched its new strategy for sustainable development, "Securing The Future", in conjunction with a Strategic Framework. The Strategy takes account of developments and new policies since the 1999 Strategy, both domestically and internationally; the changed structure of government in the UK with devolution to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland; greater emphasis on delivery at regional level and the new relationship between government and local authorities.

It also highlights the renewed international push for sustainable development from the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002. The Strategy is based on five principles: Living Within Environmental Limits; Ensuring a Strong, Healthy and Just Society; Achieving a Sustainable Economy; Promoting Good Governance; and Using Sound Science Responsibly. It also sets out shared priority areas for UK action: Sustainable Consumption and Production; Climate Change and Energy; Natural Resource Protection and Environmental Enhancement; and Sustainable Communities.                        ...more
