Military Low Flying

The MOD Guide to Low Flying in the United Kingdom

Welcome to the Ministry of Defence’s official website on military low flying. In it you will find information about why we need to practise low flying in the United Kingdom, how it is controlled and monitored, the measures we take to minimise disturbance, and information about the distribution of low flying.

We are happy to receive feedback on the content of this website and this can be sent by post or email to MOD Head Office.

A SUMMARY OF MOD’S COMMITMENT ON LOW FLYING:

  • We will make every effort to limit disturbance to the community from low flying training.
  • We will restrict the amount of low flying training in the UK to that essential for aircrews to reach and maintain their operational readiness.
  • We will assess continuously the need for low flying training in the UK.
  • We will respond positively to any requests for information about low flying training in the UK.
  • We will examine complaints individually and endeavour to provide a personal and detailed response within 15 working days.
  • We will make every effort to provide prior warning of major exercises involving military low flying activity, and provide advance notification of periods allocated for Operational Low Flying training.
  • We will publish annually information about the pattern of military low flying in the UK.
