In his first week in the job, the new Secretary of State for Defence John Reid MP, in an exclusive interview during an official visit to HMS Illustrious, told Focus newspaper, the journal of the Armed Forces and the MOD, he is looking forward to his new role. 
Leisure sailors enjoying the summer holidays afloat and commercial crews alike are reminded of the dangers of combining boating or working on merchant vessels with misuse of alcohol.
HRH Prince Andrew joined sailors from HMS Sutherland to mark VE Day in Russia. The Duke of York spoke at a ceremony in Murmansk during a parade on 8 May 2005. The sailors were honouring those who had the tough job of keeping the northern supply chains open during the Second World War, in a climate that has seen snow fall every day since 1999.
Devonport-based HMS Albion played her part in remembering the liberation of the Channel Islands sixty years ago during the celebrations on 9 May 2005.
The Prince of Wales presented two Royal Navy Sub Lieutenants with the Queen's Binoculars during his recent overnight visit to HMS Chatham.

Following the appointment of John Reid as Secretary of State for Defence, the Prime Minister announced the names of the other new Defence Ministers on 10 May 2005.
On 8 May 2005, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Cenotaph on Whitehall, London, to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of VE Day.
