Act 2000
The Act received Royal Assent on 28 July 2000.
Copies of the Act
and Explanatory Notes are available from The Stationery
Office.
Implementation
of the Act's provisions remains ongoing. The following,
however, are among those provisions, which have already
been introduced.
In
recognition of the convergence of the gas and electricity
markets, a single energy regulator, The Gas and Electricity
Markets Authority, was established in November 2000. The
offices for gas and electricity regulation have also been
merged to form the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets
(OFGEM).
November
2000 also saw the establishment of the Gas and Electricity
Consumers Council (also known as energywatch).
The Council's roles include providing a strong advocacy
role for all consumers and to be able to obtain and publish
information from energy suppliers and the regulator.
