Know Before You Go Campaign

Launched in 2001, ‘Know Before You Go’ is an ongoing consular awareness campaign run by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO). It encourages British nationals to be better prepared for their overseas trips with a view to avoiding common travelling traumas, risks and dangers. This campaign complements the FCO’s highly regarded Travel Advice service.

In particular, it encourages people to take out adequate insurance prior to overseas travel as well as providing practical advice ranging from familiarising themselves with the customs and culture of destinations, through to accessing advice on health and passport issues.

The main vehicle for the campaign is the website: www.fco.gov.uk/travel

We want this message to hit British travellers repeatedly - when they buy their holiday, travel insurance and even when they buy their suntan lotion or travel guide. Changing people’s travel preparation behaviour through educating and informing is no easy task, and the FCO can’t hope to achieve this on its own. To this end we are developing partnerships with selected companies and organizations.

To find out how to become a partner please go to The Charter for partner commitments, New Partners for an information pack, details of joining and a list of recent recruits and Current Partners for those already showing their support for the campaign. To see the ways in which partners have supported the campaign and opportunities for future involvement, please see Campaign Activity.

The partnerships are supported at the highest level. Baroness Amos, the then Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, said at the launch of the campaign in 2001:

'I hope that you will join me in working to protect British travellers and holidaymakers. Encouraging them to stay safe when abroad is in everyone’s best interests. It’s good for the public, good for the travel industry, and good for the retailers who supply travel products. By teaming up, we can get the message across much more effectively than we could separately.'
