United Nations - Peacebuilding

Aim: To build on the peacekeeping/peacebuilding reform process initiated by the Brahimi Report on UN peace operations of August 2000. Projects focus on strengthening the capacity of the UN to prevent conflict, to effectively plan, manage and undertake peace operations. Activities undertaken by the strategy have included:

Proposed Action

Regional military/civilian peacekeeping: map exercises in Thailand, Argentina and Senegal;

Civilian police: train the trainer courses in Africa, China, Jordan, Poland, Hungary and Argentina;

Pre-deployment training: in demining for Kenyan personnel in the UN mission in Ethiopia/Eritrea;

A workshop: on the protection of civilians in armed conflict;

Assistance to the UN Department: of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) on logistics;

Development of a UK peacekeeping website: and an Open University peacekeeping module;

Contribution to the Early Warning and Preventive Measures: courses run by the UN;

Support: for the Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum and the International Peace Academy.
