ISRAEL & THE OCCUPIED TERRITORIES – FOREIGN OFFICE AMENDS TRAVEL ADVICE

The Foreign Office amended Travel Advice for Israel and the Occupied territories on 13 August to reflect the continuing deterioration in law and order across the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The new advice reads: 'We advise against all travel to Nablus, Jenin and the Gaza Strip outside Gaza City. We strongly advise against all travel to the West bank and Gaza Strip at night. We advise against all but essential travel to Gaza City, and most of the West Bank.' We continue to advise against travel along Israel's border with Lebanon, and close to the Israeli side of the Israel/Gaza Strip border.

Foreign Office Minister Denis MacShane spoke at the Joint Business Breakfast for Birmingham and Coventry & Warwickshire Chambers of Commerce on 13 August. Dr MacShane focused on Britain's involvement with Europe, in particular highlighting the business needs of the West Midlands: 'The EU is about fairness, creating equal chances for all - to trade, to work, to study.' He continued: 'The people of the West Midlands want an EU that works for them. And the British people deserve a Europe with the UK at its heart, influencing its decisions, strengthening its institutions and shaping its future.'

FOREIGN OFFICE ROWER BEGINS BID FOR OLYMPIC MEDAL

Foreign Office employee, Cath Bishop, begins her bid for an Olympic medal in the women's coxless pairs rowing on 14 August. This will be Cath's third Olympics and her first since joining the Foreign Office.
