Securing our Future Health: Taking a Long-Term View

An Interim Report

Budget 2001 announced that Derek Wanless, former Group Chief Executive of NatWest Bank, would undertake a review of the technological, demographic and medical trends over the next two decades that will affect the Health Service.  The review will report to the Chancellor in time to inform the 2002 Spending Review.

This interim report sets out for consultation the evidence compiled so far and explains the approach to its analysis.It consists of three sections:

Section A:

  • Provides an overview and summarises the issues for consultation;

Section B

  • Outlines the historical context (Chapter 3);
  • Explores the issues around financing health care (Chapter 4) and;
  • Gives the international context to the Review (Chapter 5).

Section C

  • Assesses the impact of health trends (Chapter 6);
  • Analyses public expectations for the health service (Chapter 7);
  • Discusses the issues around delivering a high quality service (Chapter 8);
  • Explores changing health needs (Chapter 9);
  • Considers technological advances (Chapter 10);
  • Describes workforce and productivity issues (Chapter 11);and
  • Looks at the differences between countries within the UK (Chapter 12).
