Pre Budget 2002

End of year fiscal report

This is the first year that the Government has published an end of year fiscal report.  It provides a further enhancement in the Government's reporting and analysis of retrospective fiscal developments.  In particular, the report looks at trends in the public finances and policy in 2000-01 and 2001-02, analysing:

The report shows that the Government was firmly on track to meet its fiscal rules in 2000-01 and 2001-02 with strong surpluses on the current budget in both years and low and stable levels of public sector net debt leving the public finances well placed to play their part in maintaining economic stability.

Further improved transparency will bring the UK fully in line with international best practice and will provide a better understanding of the background to the forward-looking public finances projection published in the Pre-Budget Report.  End of year fiscal reports will be published alongside future Pre-Budget Reports.
