*******Update to the Equality and Diversity: Age Matters

consultation (current as of May 2004)******

We are in the process of reviewing the timetable for further consultation.

We are doing so in the light of our clear commitment to give those with responsibilities and with rights as much time as possible to prepare for the new legislation coming into force in 2006, and to do so with regulations that are clear and effective.

EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY: AGE MATTERS

A consultation on proposals for outlawing age discrimination in employment and vocational training

The Government published Equality and Diversity: Age Matters on 2 July 2003.

It seeks views on proposals for the implementation of new anti-discrimination law under the European Employment Directive. It is the first consultation to focus exclusively on proposals for age legislation.

Implementing the age strand of the Employment Directive will outlaw age discrimination in employment and vocational training. Age Matters seeks views on a number of issues including: retirement age; recruitment, selection and promotion; pay and non-pay benefits; unfair dismissal; employment-related insurance and statutory redundancy payments.

The Way Ahead consultation at the end of 2002 discussed some issues of relevance to age. You can obtain a copy by phoning 0870 1502 500 and quoting reference URN 02/1164.

Five documents make up the consultation pack:

You can get printed copies from the DTI Publications Orderline - tel: 0870 1502 500.

These documents are also available in alternative formats - for example Braille. Please contact the DTI on freephone 0800 5873596 to request your copies.

We shall develop draft legislation once we have considered the responses to this consultation. The timetable set out in the Age Matters consultation document has changed, and we are in the process of reviewing our timetable for further consultation. We are doing so in the light of our clear commitment to give those with responsibilities and with rights as much time as possible to prepare for the new legislation coming into force on 1 October 2006, and to do so with regulations that are clear and effective.

The consultation ends on 20 October 2003. Please respond electronically using either the pdf version pdf (259Kb) or the MS Word version (147Kb) of the response form.
