The National Archives is a unique record of the past. Our collection covers the British Isles, the territories that formed the British Empire and the countries of the Commonwealth. It runs from the Domesday Book to the most recent government papers. Whatever your interests, we have documents that will bring you closer to history as it happened.

While you are here you should visit our museum with its impressive permanent displays and a rolling programme of exhibitions. We also have a popular on site restaurant. We are based in West London and have excellent transport links. Entrance to The National Archives is free.

Those who are particularly interested in family history will find the Family Records Centre helpful. You can look at microfilm copies of useful documents here, and the shop has many books and pamphlets on the subject.
