The National Archives is a unique record of the past. Our collection covers the British Isles, the territories that formed the British Empire and the countries of the Commonwealth. It runs from the Domesday Book to the most recent government papers. Whatever your interests, we have documents that will bring you closer to history as it happened.

While you are here you should visit our museum with its impressive permanent displays and a rolling programme of exhibitions. We also have a popular on site restaurant. We are based in West London and have excellent transport links. Entrance to The National Archives is free.

Those who are particularly interested in family history will find the Family Records Centre helpful. You can look at microfilm copies of useful documents here, and the shop has many books and pamphlets on the subject. See our planning your visit page to see which building will be more helpful for you before setting off.

Whichever office you use, when you visit or call, our expert staff will help you get the best out of your visit. A thousand years of history is waiting for you to explore it!
