Access to Archives

Access to Archives (A2A) will help you search for information about archives in England, dating from the 900s to the present day. These archives are cared for in local record offices and libraries, universities, museums and national and specialist institutions across England.

You have to use a finding aid - usually an index or catalogue - to find what you want in archives. A2A allows you to search across finding aids from nearly 300 repositories. You can then arrange to visit or to obtain copies of documents with a few mouse clicks.

The database is regularly updated so it is well worth having a browse from time to time.

Moving Here

Moving Here is a website that looks at the experience of immigration to England over the last 200 years. The site currently focuses on four communities, Caribbean, Irish, Asian and Jewish.

We worked with many museums and institutions across the country to create this unique resource. With the wealth of records, pictures and stories it holds, Moving Here is now the first stop for anyone interested in the story of immigration.

Accessions to repositories

This is an annual survey that collects information from throughout the British Isles about manuscript accessions in the course of the year.

This information is added to the indexes of the National Register of Archives. It is also edited and used to produce thematic digests that you can get from this web site. These are also published in various journals and newsletters.
