74% of Investors Interested in Investing in Renewable Energy

Investing in Renewable Energy

London, 23 March 2004: The first in - depth UK investor survey since the Government extended the Renewables Obligation in December 2003 has shown a strong appetite for investing in renewable energy with 74% saying they are definitely interested in investing in renewable energy.

Renewable Energy is now a reality in Britain. Renewables account for 3.8 % of total energy production and this is increasing, significantly. The Government is committed to a target of 10% renewable energy by 2010 and 15% by 2015, to ensure that we move to new sustainable energy sources that safeguard both our energy supplies and the environment.

But is the Government’s commitment to renewable energy shared by the investment community and is there a viable business case for investing?

‘Investing in Renewable Energy’ is the first piece of research to focus solely on the attitudes of the UK investment community to renewables. The qualitative survey conducted by Gavin Anderson & Company amongst 60 investors and advisers is also the first comprehensive survey published since the Government announced its 2015 renewable target in December 2003.

The key finding of the report is that the majority of investors have a strong appetite for investing in renewable energy. They have a good understanding of the opportunities and risks and believe there is a definite business case.

The case for investing is driven by Government commitment to renewables and investors point to the existing schemes, incentives and penalties as evidence of the growth stimulated by government activity. It is also Government commitment that is perceived to be the greatest risk - with long term commitment beyond 2015 seen as a critical requirement to maintaining investor confidence.

Other factors driving positive investor sentiment are the realisation that the global community needs to find real and sustainable alternatives to safeguard energy supplies and the fact that the government targets would push the UK into a leading position in Europe. Investors in the UK understand there are global opportunities in renewables.

Stephen Timms, Energy Minister, commented:
“One of our overriding objectives is to engage the hearts and minds of the investor community in order to achieve the ambitious targets that we have set for renewable energy production. I am encouraged by the level of enthusiasm for renewables amongst investors and their advisors.”

Ken Cronin, Head of the Gavin Anderson & Company Energy Practice, commented:
“ The survey shows that the renewable industry has come a long way in a short period of time, the City understands that the investment opportunities are here and now. Just as importantly this survey also highlights that work needs to continue to address the concerns of the City.”

DTI to power up resources for planners

Planners in the UK will be the focus of a DTI campaign to provide practical information and advice on renewable energy sources.

In the coming months the DTI renewable energy unit will be equipping planners with best practice information and case studies to give them the resources they need to deal with applications in their areas.

David Still, the DTI’s renewables adviser, said: “Our objective is to provide planners with all the information and the tools they need to determine planning applications for renewable energy schemes in their area. The UK has great potential to unlock renewable energy sources yet there are myths and misunderstandings about the technologies which often tend to cloud planning applications.

“We want to help planners get the information they need easily and in manner tailored to meet the issues they face in their day to day work.”

Details of the DTI campaign will be released in February 2004.
