Latest Air Quality News
Provisional Headline AQ Indicator figures for 2003 released.
Date:15/01/2004
The government's provisional annual Air Quality Headline Indicator, published today, estimates that there were more than twice as many days of moderate or higher air pollution last year as there were in 2002.
High levels of ozone caused by hot, sunny weather in June, July and August when temperatures reached record highs were mainly to blame. A significant amount of the poor air quality was caused by pollution blown into the UK from abroad as well as local sources.
Long-term trends in average concentrations of urban pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, particles, carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide continue to be down.
Further information on the headline indicator is available at http://www.defra.gov.uk/news/2004/040115a.htm. A statement from Defra minister Lord Whitty is at http://www.defra.gov.uk/news/2004/040115b.htm.

Paper issued estimating the health impact of the August 2003 air pollution episode.
Date:15/01/2004
A short paper has been published by netcen estimating the number of deaths brought forward by increased concentrations of ozone and PM10 particulate matter during the August heatwave in 2003, compared to the same period in 2002. It can be downloaded here and is also available from the Research Information section of this web site.

Provisional figures show Air Quality Strategy 2003 objectives for carbon monoxide, benzene and 1,3-butadiene have been met at UK automatic monitoring stations.
Date:15/01/2004
Provisional results for 2003 from the UK's automatic monitoring stations show that:

- The maximum 8-hour running mean carbon monoxide concentration was below 10 mg/m3 at all monitoring locations.
- The maximum running annual mean benzene concentration was below 16.25 ug/m3 at all monitoring locations.
- The maximum running annual mean 1,3-butadiene concentration was below 2.25 ug/m3 at all monitoring locations.

Summer Air Pollution Episode Reports
Date:08/10/2003
Three reports are now available reporting on air pollution episodes during one of the hottest and longest summers on record. The reports investigate HIGH ozone air pollution in July , August and September 2003. Further pollution episode reports for 2002 and 2003 are also available in our Report Database.

Feasibility Study for London Low Emission Zone (LEZ) Launched
Date:09/07/2003
