The Home Safety
Network (HSN) was launched in 2000 to help
reduce the high toll of serious home accidents in the UK, and is
intended to help inform safety professionals and the public of the
hazards.
The HSN brings together
information, research and publicity materials
produced by DTI and others about related topics and about any
relevant events we are aware of.
The intention is not
to duplicate or compete with the excellent work already being
carried out by other government departments, local authorities, the Royal
Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), the Child
Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT), Help
the Aged and others, but
rather to complement their work by providing a more inclusive
framework which promotes more ‘joined-up’ and effective
working in preventing accidents in the home.

Other
Government Departments
The
Office of the Deputy Prime Minister has overall responsibility
for Fire Safety. Their Fire
Kills! website contains a wealth of information and
advice.
The
Department of Health is active in
the area of accident prevention and medicine safety. The
NHS supported on-line Home Healthcare Guide
has first aid advice. Also, the 999 Ambulance Service telephone operators
are trained in giving first aid advice over the telephone
including advice on choking.
The Medicines
and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has the lead in government
in the area of medicines and medical products safety.
