Standards & Registration

Standards

The Standards Team works on all aspects of quality standards concerning MLA's sector. Its remit includes Museum Registration, Designation, Sharing Skills (SMSMA), matters relating to Best Value, and Workforce development and training issues. An early ground-clearing exercise recently completed was a mapping of standards and guidelines relevant to the three domains.

Standards Pilot Grant Scheme

In the autumn of 2002, MLA established a Pilot Grant Scheme for one year only, to establish the need for, and value of, such a scheme. The aim of scheme was to enable museums, archives and libraries to apply for small grants (up to a maximum of £2,000) to assist with developing projects which would improve the quality, or raise the standards, of service delivered directly to the user. The awards were made in November 2002, and the successful projects are due to report to MLA in the summer of 2003. For more information on these projects, see below.

Registration

Guidelines for Museum Registration (1995) PDF 76KBformat: pdf version 1.4

The Registration Scheme for Museums and Galleries in the United Kingdom was introduced in 1988 and revised in 1995. It is currently being developed to bring it up to date. It is a minimum standards scheme which provides an assurance of quality and public accountability.
