Meeting the Challenge

Meeting the challenges ahead

To meet the challenges the UK faces, DTI has developed a strong strategic direction and a culture that delivers on its promises, by focusing on its customers, developing policy based on rigorous analysis of the evidence, ensuring value for money and striving for continuous improvement.

We are doing this through:

  • The DTI Strategy
We have sharpened our focus and developed a strategy based on rigorous analysis of the UK's economic and productivity performance

  • Greater customer focus
We are improving the support we offer business and streamlining our operations to take the DTI to its customers

  • Making our services easier to access
DTI customers will find the information and services they need more easily through initiatives such as businesslink.gov.uk - a cross-government website that will give businesses access to information and support

  • Developing and valuing our people
An accredited Investor in People, we are committed to making the DTI a great place to work. We are developing and valuing a diverse workforce, who can bring the right skills in the right place to deliver on our objectives
"It is so rewarding to see how my colleagues at the DTI have embraced the differing perspectives of the Independent Board Members. We bring a wide range of experience and diversity of view, but we are clearly focused on helping business meet the challenges of the changing modern economy."

Mair Barnes, Strategy Board and Services Group Board, DTI. Non-Executive Director for Scottish Power; GWR; Patientline; and Woolworths Holdings Ltd (South Africa).

  • Embracing external experience
At any one time DTI has around 135 people seconded into the department and around 35 out in placements as diverse as the DTI's customers themselves. We are opening up more senior posts to external recruitment and have 21 talented independent members on our boards drawn from a range of business, voluntary sector, trade unions and academic backgrounds

  • Commitment to continuous improvement
We are committed to continuing the process of improvement in everything we do, working hand in hand with our stakeholders, customers and other policy makers at all levels to achieve prosperity for all
