Competitiveness of the UK Steel Industry

Brief description:

The DTI works closely with the steel industry to improve the competitiveness of the sector and encourage adoption of best practice. The UK Steel Association, together with it’s subsidiary Steel Training Ltd, have taken forward a number of collaborative projects in recent years, designed to improve the business performance of their member companies. Projects are supported by DTI with the trade associations and participating companies making in-kind and cash contributions.

DTI also works closely with the National Association of Steel Stockholders, the British Constructional Steelwork Association and the Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association to improve the performance of their member companies.

Recent activities have included:

  • Sponsorship of a study of e-business in the steel sector. The study was conducted by Hatch Beddows and managed by the UK Steel Association in collaboration with the National Association of Steel Stockholders, the British Construction Steelwork Association, the Confederation of British Metalformers and the British Metals Federation. A summary of the report can be found on www.uksteel.org.uk/ecomm.htm.
  • Development of a structured approach to continuous improvement in business planning through adaptation of the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) Business Excellence Model in order to meet the specific needs of steel companies..
  • Producing a sectoral analysis of the steel stockholding sector designed to raise awareness of the value added by stockholders, increase investment and improve recruitment.
  • Production of investment appraisal software, a financial handbook and undertaking a financial benchmarking exercise, designed to improve business performance in the constructional steelwork sector.

On-going projects include:

  • The Steel Industry Managers in the 21st Century Project (Steel Training) whose objective is to design a management development model specific to the sector.
  • The Metal Industry Competitiveness Enterprise (MICE) is a 5 year project based on the principles of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Association (SMMT) Industry Initiative. It aims to deliver long-term sustainable improvement to metals sector competitiveness through the provision of Master Classes in shop floor process improvements. The project was launched by Alan Johnson, Minister for Competitiveness on 25 February 2000.

Eligibility for the on-going projects is through membership of the UK Steel Association which is open to any company involved in steel production or primary transformation of steel.
