museums & galleries

Museums and galleries are a major educational resource, an important part of our cultural heritage and a valued resource in their communities. They help us to understand the many histories which have contributed to our present culture.

They stimulate our minds in new and exciting ways.

The recent introduction of free admission to DCMS sponsored museums and galleries has increased the number of visitors to over 30 million a year.

The Museums & Libraries Sponsorship unit within DCMS provides advice to both government and the museums and galleries sector on a wide range of policy issues, providing support and sponsorship to 22 Museums and Galleries on access and other topics.

The Department's sponsored museums and galleries are run by independent Boards of Trustees, the majority of whom are appointed by either the Prime Minister or the Secretary of State following scrutiny by independent advisory panels. The latest DCMS public appointment vacancies are available online.

The Department also works alongside a number of other bodies, such as the Regional Agencies and Museums, Libraries and Archives Council and the Department for Education and Skills to take a strategic role in the wider museums sector for other museums such as those run by universities or local authorities and local independent museums and galleries.
