To save time, you can order up to three documents ahead of your visit to us, either by telephone or email, and we will have them ready for you when you arrive. Please allow at least one working days notice prior to your visit.

If you are new to The National Archives you will have to register at reception to get a reader's ticket. You can save time when you arrive by pre-registering your details either by telephone or via our online reader registration form. If you do pre-register you will still be asked to show proof of identity at reception.

Email orders

You can request advanced orders of up to three documents by using our Link to order form. You can also request a bulk order of more than three documents via the Link to order form. You must give at least two working days notice for a bulk order. You will not be able to keep a bulk order for more than two days and can only make one such order at a time.

Telephone orders

Alternatively, you can call us on 020 8392 5200 and order documents. Please have the following information ready:

  • Your name
  • Your reader ticket number (if you have one)
  • The date of your visit
  • Full document references
  • Your daytime telephone number

Whether you use email or the telephone, we cannot guarantee that everything you order will be available. You may wish to give us 3 alternative references just in case.

Remember, for orders required the following day you must ring us before 16:00. Some documents are kept at a separate storage facility. You can order up to five of these offsite documents at a time. The documents will however take three working days for delivery. If you know the documents you are ordering are not stored at The National Archives please let us know.
