Environmental Security

Oilfield in Kuwait
Environmental pressures can destabilise nations and regions and displace waves of environmental refugees from their homes. Increasing competition for water, fisheries, and productive land, especially as the result of climate change, is likely to increase these problems. The Environmental Security Team seeks to identify the environmental causes of political tension, which can contribute to violent conflict, and neutralise them through preventive diplomacy that promotes co-operation. It is also supporting ways of repairing environmental damage caused by conflict situations.

Freshwater is a major concern and the UK, in co-operation with partners such as the European Union, is working to reduce tension over water amongst the republics of Central Asia. The FCO is funding a programme to train environmental managers from the Niger Delta, a region with many sustainable development concerns, in the UK and Nigeria. With other Government Departments, it is helping Russia deal with the nuclear contamination caused by submarine nuclear reactors in the North West, under an £84 million nuclear safety programme for the newly independent States. And it has contributed to efforts by the United Nations Environment Programme to assess and deal with the environmental consequences of conflict in the Balkans.
