'Climate Change remains unquestionably the most urgent environmental challenge.' Tony Blair
The response will require a sustained global effort over decades, to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases through clean energy and transport, and other changes in technology and behaviour.
The FCO contributes to this effort as part of the UK team, led by DEFRA, in the international negotiations on climate change. Working through the UK’s diplomatic posts, it promotes dialogue with governments and other stakeholders around the world in search of common approaches to the problems that arise in the negotiations. Through the Climate Change and Energy Programme of the Global Opportunities Fund it works with partner countries and NGOs to encourage the use of climate-friendly technologies.
The FCO is also leading on delivery of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership, a commitment made at the WSSD in Johannesburg last year.
