January 1st 2003 is the 30th Anniversary of Britain's accession to then EEC - what is now the European Union.

Opportunities New Europe - UK regional events
The Minister for Europe, Denis MacShane, is leading a country-wide programme of events to engage local audiences on the enlargement of the EU next year, giving people the opportunity to find out about the new countries that will be joining the EU and discuss just how this will impact on them.

There are also two short videos recorded by Dr MacShane. In the first, he talks about the how Britain benefits from EU membership; in the second, targeted at a youth audience, he also talks about the future of Europe and how it affects young people.
