Subsectors
- a list of Industries covered by this sector

|
Overview
Broadly defined, the
electrotechnical sector covers the complete spectrum of electrical,
electronic and mechanical industries from capital power equipment
to wiring accessories. It also touches on many other sectors within
what is traditionally thought of as 'The Engineering Industry'.
It had a turnover in the UK in 1999 in the region of £93
billion over 40% of which is exported.
The manufacture
of mechanical machinery and equipment generated a turnover
of nearly £32 billion in 1999, around one third of which
was exported.
Process
Engineering Contractors cover all aspects (including design)
required for the complete execution of onshore projects for the
processing industries including chemicals, oil & gas, electricity
generation and food & drink. The UK has the second largest
concentration of process industry contracting capability in the
world. The industry's annual turnover is estimated to be about
£14bn and exports account for around 50% of total business.
The majority
of this information was compiled from details supplied by the
DTI.
Government Sponsorship of the Engineering
(Electrical, Mechanical & Process) Sector
DTI's Engineering
Industries Directorate (EID)
EID promotes the competitiveness, technological excellence and
sustainable growth of UK engineering industries, working in partnership
with the industries and their stakeholders. EID works principally
to:
identify the needs of business and ensure that Government, EU
and international policy and activities take these into account;
understand the factors that affect and help firms improve their
competitiveness; stimulate innovation, enterprise and investment;
encourage best practice throughout business; assist the development
of strong and competitive markets and encourage the exploitation
of market opportunities.

External Trade Organisation (JETRO). It aims to increase UK component
manufacturers' supply to Japanese electronics companies based
in the UK. The scheme is open to UK-based component manufacturers
(electronics, plastic or mechanical components), software producers
and high-tech companies. Further information is available on the
DTI web site
and the JEBA website.
The
Pacific Rim Electronics Business Association (PREBA)
PREBA
is an industry-led initiative, supported by DTI. PREBA aims to
help UK-based component suppliers take up opportunities to supply
Pacific Rim electronics manufacturers operating in the UK. The
scheme is open to UK-based component manufacturers (electronics,
plastics and mechanical components). Further information is available
on the DTI website
and the PREBA website.
Surface
engineering
This
is an industry-led competitiveness improvement programme aimed
at raising the performance of the UK surface engineering industry
