Real Time Traffic Information (updated live)

Following the success of the M25 Real Time Trial, the Highways Agency has developed some further real time demonstrators for the English Motorway network.

The TrafficMap service gives you comprehensive information about motorway incidents and what the motorway signs are saying, to help you plan your journey.

The Real Time Traffic Service gives you current speed and flow information for five selected areas: M25/London, Kent, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds.

M25 Sphere: Real Time Incidents, Current and Planned Roadworks and Typical Traffic Speeds Pilot displays information about incidents on the M25 Sphere network. This information is supplied and updated in real time by Route Stewards at the scene of the incident. (For more information on the M25 Sphere, click here.)

The real time traffic information for all three demonstrations is sent from equipment along the motorway to a centralised location where it is analysed and distributed to these traffic information projects.

Note: These services are currently offered on an interim basis and will be replaced by a fully supported TCC service when it is operational in 2004.

Video Information Highway

The impetus for the Video Information Highway (VIH) trial came about as a result of requests from outside bodies for access to Highways Agency's Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) images. Some local authorities and police forces already make selected images available for use in local traffic broadcast slots on radio and television news and the VIH trial was launched to allow this to take place in a more structured and flexible manner.

For the VIH trial a number of cameras have been selected to provide freeze-frame images from cameras on the Avon & Somerset motorway network. The trial will last until July 2003

The project aims to provide a model for a national roll-out of such a service. Please let us have your comments on the trial. Please note that the VIH system will be offline on Thursday January 8, between 9.30am and 4pm, for essential maintenance. We apologise for any inconvenience.
