Navigation

The content of the DTI Energy Group web site is organised under sector sub sites, accessed from the tabbed menu at the top of each page, and generic and cross-sector links provided in the left hand menu on each page.

Cross-sector navigation, identified by the light yellow background, is removed from the left hand menu in sector sub sites and can be found at the foot of the page instead. In its place there are customised links for navigating the sector sub site and a link down to the cross-sector navigation. The exception to this is the Oil and Gas sector tab which links directly to the Oil and Gas Directorate's own web site.

There are some occasions when content is referenced from multiple locations and a link will take you to another part of the site, consequently the 'breadcrumbs' provided towards the top of the page, displaying the path you have taken to a particular page, will not accurately reflect the path you have actually taken. Generally, where this occurs, it is highlighted beside the link itself.

Links to external sites, ie those not hosted on the DTI server, should usually open in a new window. You can then navigate around that site and not lose your place in the Energy Group site.

Do use the search facility if you are looking for something in particular. A quick search field is provided in the right hand menu of top level pages. On lower level pages where this is not available, a text link to the search page is provided in the left hand menu on every page.

What is a PDF?

Portable Document Format (PDF) is a particular type of file which we use in many places across our sites. To view PDF files you need to use Acrobat Reader software which can be downloaded, free of charge, from PDF help.

Adobe has developed PDF conversion tools specifically for the benefit of blind and visually impaired users. The tools enable PDF files to be read easily by standard speech-synthesis software and will not retain the graphic images or text formatting of the original PDF.

What is a DOC file?

DOC files are produced and read by Microsoft Word. The DOC files on this site were produced on Word 97. Microsoft Word 97 and later, or other popular word processing programs can be used to read these files. If you do not own a program that can view DOC files, the Microsoft Word Viewer can be downloaded from the Microsoft website; there is a version for Windows 3.x and Windows 95 and greater.

What is a PPT file?

PPT files open in Microsoft Powerpoint. If you do not own the full program, the Microsoft Powerpoint Viewer can be downloaded from the Microsoft website.

What is an XLS file?

XLS files contain data from Microsoft Excel, though they can be read by many spreadsheet programs. If you do not own a program that can view Excel files, the Microsoft Excel Viewer can be downloaded from the Microsoft website.

What is a ZIP file?

ZIP files are compressed 'archives' containing one or more other files. Software is needed in order to 'un-compress' ZIP files, and use the files they contain. Winzip for Windows and Aladdin StuffIt Expander for the Apple Macintosh are examples of such programmes that have free or evaluation versions available for download.
