Achieving Competitiveness through Innovation and Value Engineering (ACTIVE)

Brief description

ECI ACTIVE is an industry-led supply chain initiative, which aims to benefit engineering construction projects in the UK by implementation of better working practices. It aims to build upon and improve the competitiveness of the UK as a site for process plant projects for industries including onshore oil and gas, chemicals, petro-chemicals, pharmaceuticals and utilities.

ECI ACTIVE is an aligned approach by clients, contractors and suppliers to eliminate the process engineering industry of its non-added value costs, including such areas as man-to-man marking on sites, non-functional suppliers and multi-tendering. As a result of activity by a number of industry working groups, 8 ACTIVE Principles have been developed and since the merger with ECI a further four have been added. The current principles comprise :-

  • Project Definition
  • Project Design
  • Procurement
  • Construction
  • Commissioning & Operation
  • People and Team Management
  • Effective Project Contracts
  • Project Improvement Processes
  • Project Control
  • Safety, Health & Environment
  • Information Management
  • Business Environment

ECI ACTIVE's current focus is to ensure that the principles are taken up by industry and a three-part strategy is underway of:-

  • Communication
  • Education
  • Implementation

Under this strategy the ECI ACTIVE principles are being promoted through publications, conferences, workshops and training courses. Pilot projects to demonstrate the practical benefits of the ECI ACTIVE principles have been completed and the results have been benchmarked and disseminated amongst members.

ECI ACTIVE is now merged with the European Construction Institute (ECI) which develops similar programmes of activity across Europe.
