The
recent downturn and restructuring in the telecoms market did not prevent
companies presenting new phones at Europe’s biggest Information
Communication Technologies (ICT) event this year. Most of the major
telecom manufacturers were there. Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, Sendo, Siemens
and Sony Ericsson showed off their new products, some included 3G phones.
The Network Infrastructure side was well represented by companies like
Alcatel, Cisco, Fujitsu, Lucent and Nortel, demonstrating their products
and support services. Mobile
Matters – UK Day Power Panel One
of the events organised under the “UK@” banner was a Power Panel
called “Mobile Matters”. The panel brought together industry
experts from different parts of the mobile communications industry to
discuss hot topics affecting the sector. The
event was a successful showcase of the strengths of the UK in mobile –
both home grown companies like O2 and Morpheme and inward investors like
Nortel and Siemens, parent company of Roke Manor. Sir
Stephen Brown, Chief Executive of British Trade International, delivered
opening remarks highlighting UK strengths in the mobile field, latest
regulatory developments including the Communications Bill and the
attractions of the UK as a location for inward investment. Panellists Mike Short from O2 and the Mobile Data
Association, Paul Stein from Roke Manor Research, Thomas Reynaert from
Nortel Networks and Matt Spall from mobile games specialists Morpheme
engaged in a lively discussion on trends in mobile data, the impact of 3G
and wireless LAN on the industry, the importance of content and the role
of government. There were interesting contributions from the knowledgeable
audience gathered at CeBit, covering topics such as applications of
Bluetooth and the growing relevance of WAP. Invest
UK
was also at CeBit to promote the UK and its excellence in R&D, as well
as showcasing some of the new exciting technologies being developed at UK
universities. These universities participating, supported by their RDAs,
presented their technologies daily on the stand. A number of receptions
were held in the evenings as part of their campaign. They also with
DTI’s Business Relations group, facilitated the UK Day Power Panel on
the 18th March.
