Fair Markets Group

Stephen Haddrill is the Director General with the overall responsibility for the Fair Markets Group.

Other useful information is available from the DTIs executive agencies:

The Fair Markets Group has been created to help DTI work with business, employees and consumers to drive up UK productivity and competitiveness, with the aim of promoting prosperity for all.

The Group's role is to deliver a competitive framework for the growth of successful businesses and jobs, and a fair deal for consumers. In doing this, we aim for:

  • open and dynamic markets with economic reform in Europe and freedom in world trade and an effective competition regime

  • confident participants, including empowered employees, dynamic businesses and active consumers and investors who are assured by the fairness and integrity of the market framework and are well informed about rights and responsibilities.

The Group has a cross cutting role in DTI to strengthen our European and global impact. This is being taken forward by Richard Carden, Director General of Europe and World Trade.

We also promote better regulation throughout DTI, with full recognition of small business concerns. This cross-cutting DTI project is led from the Fair Markets DG's Office in partnership with the Regulation and Small Business Policy Directorate within the Small Business Service

We are divided into a number of Directorates:

Europe and World Trade brings together the former Trade and Europe Policy directorates and aims to make the UK an effective partner in the EU, and more widely, to develop open, dynamic and efficient markets and so contribute to creating a highly productive UK economy within a competitive EU and a sustainable world trading environment. These webpages are under development and we hope to have a link for EWT in the near future.

Company Law and Investigations work closely with business to maintain and develop an effective and competitive legal framework which gives confidence to investors and creditors.

Consumer and Competition Policy takes the lead within Government on consumer and competition policy in the UK, in the European Union and internationally.

Employment Relations works to maintain a balanced framework for commercial activity and encourages a skilled and flexible labour market founded on the principle of social partnership.

The Women and Equality Unit joined Fair Markets Group on 28 May 2002.  It has responsibility for Gender Equality and Equality co-ordination across Whitehall, and helping the Government deliver on issues of interest to women and minority ethnic groups.

The Group also sponsors the Low Pay Commission which is an independent NDPB.
