The Plugs and Sockets etc (Safety)
Regulations 1994 SI 1994 No. 1768
|
Subject Area |
These Regulations require domestic
plugs in the UK to be independently certificated as complying
with British Standard BS1363.
Domestic socket outlets, adaptors,
fuselinks etc are required to meet the relevant British Standard.
Additionally the Regulations require most domestic electrical
appliances to be pre-fitted with a compliant standard plug.
|
|
Coverage |
Specifically intended for the
domestic area but may be used for guidance in the workplace.
|
Intention of
legislation |
The original regulations were
made in 1987 to outlaw shoddy, mainly imported, copies which
did not comply with the strict requirements of BS1363. The 1994
Amendment was made to prevent products being marketed without
plugs as many accidents were caused by consumers fitting plugs
in an unskilled manner.
|
|
Implementing legislation |
These Regulations apply only in
the UK market, i.e. they do not implement a European Directive.
|
|
Enforcement |
The Regulations are enforced by
the Local Authorities'
trading standards departments.
|
|
Current Position |
The market is now well regulated
and we have had few reports of non-compliance. A review of the
Regulations is likely to commence later this year.
|
|
Guidance |
No specific guidance is available.
Suppliers seeking advice should contact their Local
Authority trading standards department.
